The Virtual SEM for Students

These pages use JavaScript to create the illusion of controlling a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). You must be using Netscape 3.0 or higher and JavaScript must be enabled. Here are the instructions for using the microscope:

  1. Choose a sample, put it in the microscope chamber.
  2. Activate the vacuum pump to remove air from the sample chamber and electron beam path.
    • Use the audio plug-in inserted by your browser in the box below to hear the sound of the SEM vacuum pump. Play the sound by clicking the play button on your plug-in (usually a triangle arrow pointing to the right).
  3. While operating the microscope, you will see the SEM Control Window
    • SEM Control Panel: Slide your mouse pointer over the Magnification Controls to zoom in on the specimen.
    • Image Capture: When you click a Magnification Control button, the full-sized image will be captured to this window.
  4. When you are finished viewing the sample, shut down the microscope using the Shut Down button in the SEM Control Panel window.
  5. The microscope is now ready to view the sample. Use the button below to turn on the electron beam:

You are now qualified to be an Expert Microscopist. There are more samples waiting to be studied.

Notes:

  • Actual magnification values depend on the size of your computer monitor. The values given are from the original SEM settings. They should be used as a relative measure of magnification for the set of images (e.g. 600x is magnified twice as much as 300x).
