Black Ant Rap Sheet

Name: Black Ant
AKA: Hercules
Scientific Name: Componotus herculeanus
Description:

1/4 - 1/2 inch; distinct head, thorax, pedicel and abdomen. Workers small, color mostly black. Parts of the abdomen have stiff hairs; 6 medium-size legs. Compound eyes well developed. Antennae elbowed with long first segment and 11 shorter segments. Ants have a caste system with workers, reproductives and soldiers in the colony. * Note: See the Zoom-In page of this web site for more fascinating images of the Black Ant.

Diet: Other insects, honeydew (aphid excrement), fruit juices, grains of sugar and other sweets substances.
Habitat: Dead wood of tree trunks, felled logs, wood poles and wood in attics of houses. Carpenter ant nests are built in cavities excavated in dead wood. Brood chambers accommodate eggs, larvae and pupae on these nests. Other ant species live in large colonies underground or in crevices.
Wanted For: Burrowing into wood and causing damage. Even though they do not eat wood like termites they can still cause considerable damage if left untreated. Other ants can be beneficial in cleaning up organic debris since they are such scavengers. However, they can be pests at a picnic or in the kitchen if they sense there is a good source of food.
Last Known Location: In old wood or in the attic.
