| Description: |
1/8 - 1/4 inch; roundish body and 8 long slender legs.
These are not insects but arachnids. Cream to light brown with narrow
black lines at the edge of the carapace and a broad forked line extending
from the middle of the eyes. The abdomen has a dark brown herring
bone pattern at the midline. 8 simple eyes in two rows on the anterior
portion of the cephalothorax. The hammock spider constructs a hammock-like
sheet web between branches, on fences or near buildings. The spider
hides in a corner of the web awaiting a meal. When an insect gets
tangled in the web the spider pulls it down through the web, and either
eats it or spins a small web of silk around it to save for a later
meal. |
