Caption: African violet leaf surface (Saintpaulia ionantha). The upper leaf surface contains numerous glandular and non-glandular trichomes (hairs). Shown here are numerous short (and one long) multicellular, non-glandular trichomes. Small glandular trichomes (round) are seen apposed closely to the leaf surface. These trichomes / hairs serve as a protective function against pests and also helps to reduce leaf evaporation.
