Caption: Pear fruit / parenchyma cells (Pyrus sp.). A pear is a pomaceous fruit produced by a tree of the genus Pyrus. The pear is classified within Maloideae, a subfamily of the family Rosaceae. Shown here are parenchyma cells deep within the pear fruit. A major distinction of this fruit is the occurrence of lignified cells (sclereids) known as "grit" or "stone cells". Pears contain B-complex vitamins (such as Vitamin B2 - riboflavin), vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus.
