Caption: Sulfur crystals from a volcano steam vent. Shown here are sulfur crystals/deposits on the surface of a grass blade near a steam vent at Kilauea Volcano, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Sulfur is a yellow crystalline solid. It is occurs commonly in three different forms: pure elemental sulfur, sulfides and sulfate minerals. Sulfur is an essential element of living forms and is found in two amino acids, cysteine and methionine. It is primarily used in fertilizers but can be used for gunpowder, matches, insecticides and fungicides.
