Caption: Cottonwood tree seed fibers (Populus deltoides). In the spring cottonwood trees (Populus deltoides) bloom and produce seeds that are surrounded by small tufts of cotton-like material called cottonwood fibers. Cottonwood seeds bear long white fibers that are made primarily of cellulose. The seeds are wind dispersed due to the lightweight tufts of cottonwood fibers attached to the seeds.
