Caption: Cyanobacteria endospores (Dermocarpa violacea). Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria that inhabit both marine and freshwater environments. Certain members of the phylum Cyanophyta can undergo multiple fission and produce endospores (baeocytes, shown in this image) within the original parent cell wall and surrounding extracellular mucopolysaccharide matrix. Cyanobacteria undergo oxygenic photosynthesis that is known to have converted the early reducing atmosphere into an oxidizing atmosphere. This conversion to an oxygen atmosphere dramatically changed the composition of life forms on earth by promoting a rapid increase in biodiversity. Chloroplasts in plants and eukaryotic algae have evolved from cyanobacteria via endosymbiosis. Cyanobacteria are a significant component of the marine nitrogen cycle and an important primary producer in many areas of the ocean. They are also found in other habitats such as freshwater, hypersaline inland lakes and in arid areas.
