Caption: Prosthecobacter fusiformis - prosthecate, prokaryote (bacterium). Unusual bacterium that is heterotrophic / aquatic and belongs to a new division of bacteria called Verrucomicobia. Found also in soild environments they comprise up to 3% of the microbiota of soil. Some species have bacterial tubilin genes. Prosthecobacter attaches by a holdfast at the tip of its prosthecate to algae and sheathed bacteria. Its life cycle resembles that of Caulobacter sp. but has no motile stage.
