Caption: Irpex lacteus is a basidiomycete bracket fungus in the family Polyporaceae. Shown here are the vegetative hyphae of the bracket fungus mycelium. Irpex lacteus is a common white-rot fungus called the milk-white toothed polypore. It has a wide range of temperate forest distribution. Its fruiting body is effused-reflexed growing on the underside of fallen hardwoods. Irpex lacteus shows a remarkable pollutant toxicity resistance and biodegradation efficiency. It has the ability to depolymerize and mineralize lignin using extracellular ligninolytic enzymes. Irpex lacteus has also been shown to cause fungal infections in humans, especially immunocompromised patients.
