Description: Insect ovary cell (Spodoptera frugiperda). This insect ovary cell is a continuous insect cell line that is a clone / substrain (Sf-9) of the original parent cell line (Sf-21) that was isolated from ovaries of the Fall Army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda). Spodoptera frugiperda is a moth species that is an agricultural pest on corn and various grass species. Insect cells are able to produce various eukaryotic proteins (recombinant proteins, post-translational protein modifications, protein folding etc.). Sf9 is the most commonly used cell line in biotechnology applications. These cells can be grown in suspension culture or adherent as monolayer. A variety of recombinant proteins can be obtained by utilizing the baculovirus expression system. Sf9 cells are also used to isolate and propagate recombinant baculoviral stocks. This cell line is highly susceptible to infection with Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV baculovirus).
