Caption: Tetracycline (antibiotic) crystals. Tetracycline is an antibiotic produced by the Streptomyces group (actinomycete bacteria) and is used against many bacterial infections. It is also used to produce several semi-synthetic derivatives, which are known as the Tetracyclines. Tetracycline inhibits cell growth by inhibiting protein translation. Cells become resistant to tetracycline by at least two mechanisms: efflux and ribosomal protection.
